The biblical argument: the cup and the covenant
In Matthew 26:39, Jesus prays that the cup might pass from him. In 1 Corinthians 11:25, the cup is described as “the new covenant in my blood.” In Porton’s interpretation, Jesus wanted the New Covenant to pass, just as earlier religious eras passed. Telosism is presented as the next stage of biblical revelation beyond Christianity.
In this interpretation, following the Father’s will means seeking the highest purpose through love, rather than continuing to obey a fixed set of religious commandments.
